Sugar is a natural product that can be derived from sugarcane or beet sugar. Approximately 30 % of the world’s production comes from beet sugar while 70 % is derived from sugarcane. The quality of sugar from sugarcane or beet sugar is almost the same, but can vary depending on the refining.
Sugarcane is grown in the Southern Hemisphere. The plant grows all year round and it takes approximately 18 months from it is planted until the first harvest.
Beet sugar is an annual plant which is planted in spring and harvested in autumn.
70-75 % of the sugar used in Norway is white sugar from sugarcane.
