Rice

Rice is the seed from the rice plant. The most common seed is Oryza sativa. Rice is for a large part of the world’s population the most important staple food, especially in Asia, the West Indies, Middle East, Latin America and India. Rice is the grain with the second largest worldwide production, after corn.

In Norway Basmati rice and Jasmine rice is the most common variants, but worldwide there are more than 44 000 different types of rice. There are large price variations between the different rice types.

Basmati rice is long grain rice and well known for its fragrance and delicate nuanced flavor. India is the world’s largest producer followed by Pakistan.

Jasmine rice is also long grain rice but has nuttier aroma and light color. Thailand is the world’s largest producer of jasmine rice.
